Advanced Wound Care

It takes a coordinated approach with a variety of clinical treatments (such as debridement, medicines, advanced wound dressings, hyperbaric oxygen therapy and support services) to treat problem wounds. Some of the conditions appropriate for wound therapy include:

  • Pressure Ulcers
  • Neuropathic (Diabetic) Ulcers
  • Ischemic Ulcers
  • Venous Insufficiencies/Ulcers
  • Traumatic Wounds
  • Surgical Wounds
  • Vasculitis
  • Burns
  • Peristomal Skin Irritations
  • Other Chronic Non-Healing Wounds
Patient care focuses on a whole body approach to wound healing.

What is Hyperbaric Oxygen?

Part of the reason wounds have difficulty healing is because they have reduced circulation or have experienced a decrease in oxygen levels. During hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBO), you lie down comfortably in an individual chamber which raises its oxygen pressure to greater-than-normal atmospheric pressure. Breathing oxygen within a pressurized environment enables oxygen to be delivered quickly and in great quantities to affected areas of the body. This allows your tissue to become supersaturated with oxygen thereby helping the tissue to rejuvenate itself over time.

What Disorders are Treated with HBO?

A variety of situations can be treated with hyperbaric oxygen. Routine conditions treated include:

  • Soft tissue radionecrosis (e.g., urological and other)
  • Actinomycosis
  • Preservation of compromised skin grafts and flaps
  • Chronic refractory osteomyelitis
  • Diabetic ulcer of the lower extremities
  • Crush injury/acute traumatic peripheral ischemia
  • Progressive necrotizing infections (necrotizing fasciitis)
  • Acute peripheral arterial insufficiency Osteoradionecrosis (e.g., mandibular and other bone)
  • Wound dehiscence, infection, tissue loss and graft or flap loss
